The return of popular cultures in the social sciences

Publiée 2015-08-02

Résumé

his article questions the invisibility of popular cultures in Latin American social sciences, and asks how the notion of the people can be recovered as a sociological and political subject. To do this, this notion is reconsidered from a theory of social classes, revisiting the tradition that goes from Gramsci to Bourdieu. As for the situation of the popular classes in our days, a shift in the center of gravity of the popular classes is recognized, which has passed from the workers to the employees. Popular cultures are defined here in the first instance, not by their content, but by their carriers - the popular classes - and by the type of code they use in a general way, following a proposal by Basil Berstein.
