Homeland and territory in two regions of Latin America : Antioquia (Colombia) and San Luis Potosí (Mexico)

Published 2008-03-18

Abstract

In the nation-building processes in Latin America at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the role of geographical representations played a fundamental task, especially for the creation of identity references and as a fundamental criterion for the elaboration of a imaginary of homogeneous identification. However, this process that supposes a national scope is mediated by regional geographic spaces. In this measure, the regions also built identity referents based on geographic representations. The author proposes to establish an approach in which two territorial representations served to build regional imageries within two Latin American national projects at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
