Les métamorphoses de la distinction : Inégalités culturelles dans la France d'aujourd'hui

Published 2013-04-07

Abstract

Little more than thirty years after the distinctionIn Bourdieu's celebrated book on cultural practices, Philippe Coulangeon publishes one on what he calls the contemporary "metamorphoses" of social distinction. What has happened to culture in the last three decades? The idea defended by the author is that culture continues to have a decisive weight in social trajectories and that the differentiation of lifestyles continues to be eminently economic and not only cultural or symbolic. The main argument of the author is that the distinctive effect offered by the possession of "cultural capital" was "metamorphosed". However, the interest of this publication lies not only in highlighting the above, but also in providing interesting clues as to how and what this mutation consisted of.
